#6 – Rock starter kit

I could have listed about a million different albums here, so choosing just a few was difficult. But I feel like these records give you a good mix representing the rock music that laid the groundwork for today’s artists. These are the rock artists of my youth. Guitar solo!

  • U2 – Achtung Baby – hate on U2 if you want, but you can’t deny their success. This is my favorite of their many great albums.
  • Def Leppard – Hysteria – I almost put their Greatest Hits on here instead so that you would also get ‘Photograph’, but you gotta keep it real with the Leppard and get Hysteria.
  • Guns n Roses – Appetite For Destruction – the Use Your Illusion series was good, but this record is what you’ll want to have at a party.
  • Nirvana – Nevermind – arguably the greatest rock record of all time.
  • Metallica – the black album…if you like it loud!

#7 – iTunes Match

iTunes Match is a great way to organize and store your music library if you own an iPhone/iPad or connected iPod. And like Tune Up, it also helps to organize and complete your music library’s info. The next generation of file storage technology has already begun…instead of plugging your portable device into a computer, now everything is just stored in “the cloud”. Apple’s version is called iCloud, of course. As your device needs the music file, it gets it over cellular or wifi signal, so your entire music library is available at all times without concern for storage space. EVERYTHING about file storage will be switching to this format soon (if it hasn’t already), so go ahead and get your iPhone-owning friend a $24.99/year subscription to iTunes Match. I don’t think you can just buy it, so maybe give them an iTunes gift card, and tell them to spend it on Match. Of course, if you owned a Droid this would be free…

#8 – Country starter kit

Unless you grew up in the middle of the United States, country music is an acquired taste. It’s hard to get into country without a friend guiding you, and it’s very easy to get turned off by the overabundance of junk out there. But don’t get scared away from country music so easily…here are a few artists that know how to bring it:

#9 – 80s Music starter kit

For many older artists, their greatest hits collection is usually the way to go (especially if you’re giving their music as a gift). In the case of the stereotypical “80s band”, greatest hits albums are ONLY way to go…there was too much B-side crap to sift through otherwise. Enjoy these gems (the links go to Amazon…but shop wherever you prefer):

  • New Order – you’ll know ‘Blue Monday’, and won’t even realize that you know ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ and ‘Regret’.
  • Psychedelic Furs – What?! ‘Heartbreak Beat’?! What?! Sick.
  • Cars – the definition of 80s swag.
  • Flock of Seagulls‘Space Age Love Song’ all day.
  • Thompson Twins – ‘If You Were Here’ is 80s movie soundtrack GOLD.
  • Information Society – better known for the upbeat stuff, ‘Repetition’ is the slow jam of the decade!
  • Huey Lewis & the News – “Hey you…you get your damn hands off of her…”

#10 – Tune Up

You have probably seen the commercials featuring Biz Markie, but you had no idea what they were selling. Tune Up is an awesome service that will organize a music library by analyzing the songs, fixing each song’s info (artist/title/etc), and adding cover art. Sweet! You can get a lifetime version for $50, and there are cheaper options if you want to buy the features separately…even a FREE demo version. Music nerds like myself won’t need it (I wish mp3’s came in vinyl sleeves that could alphabetized neatly on a shelf), but the casual downloader will really appreciate it!

Nothing says “Christmas Cheer” like spending all of your money and eating macaroni & cheese for a month…deck the halls of my stomach with processed cheese! Well, your boy is here to brighten the mood like a digital Santa Claus…HoHoHo.mp3! Check out these links to FREE music:

1. DC rapper Wale has been giving away FREE music like a maniac, and in 2011 dropped his for-pay album Ambition. You should get it (Amazon or iTunes)…it’s legit. ‘Bait’ is a track that’s been around on his mixtapes for a little while, and you can get the remix of that track for FREE at this link. Wale is the man…no days off.

2. I love dubstep…a very unique opinion, I know. Rinse FM is the shit…it’s a London radio station that plays mostly dubstep, and an easy way to solve the “what should we play at this party?” problem. You can stream Rinse live…it’s what I normally default to when I need quality background music to get some work done. Also, if you listen to Rinse you are allowed to says words like wanker and ridicule Americans.

3. Howard Stern fans…if you have been keeping up with the current Benjy Bronk/Elisa Jordana saga, you know that there’s some funny shit going on. The duo have teamed up on a FREE track called ‘Online Sweetheart’, and it is not-to-be-missed! Yes, it’s terrible…but that’s a requirement in Benjy vortex.

4. Don’t forget to check in periodically with Live From Daryl’s House. The webcast show starring Daryl Hall + a musical guest will soon be on TV! Daryl Hall is a genuine musical genius with special songwriting talent. Here’s a link to a great episode featuring Mayer Hawthorne and Booker T. Jones. What?? Mayer is an up-and-coming artist who you need to check out…his song ‘No Strings’ has been on repeat in my library for a while. Enjoy!

I’ve got a bad feeling about this:

Miss me?

10Dec11

Miss me?

Where have the blog posts been?  There can only be 2 possible explanations:

1. Like any genius performer, I realized that I needed to walk away, and leave my fans wanting more. Why haven’t they played ‘Livin On A Prayer’ yet?!?! Then explode back onto stage with amps on blast. Now you may be thinking that, by telling you that this was my intent, this paragraph may have a “reverse psychology” affect which will backfire and anger you. What you don’t realize is that I’ve reversed the reverse psychology, and you are trapped in my vortex, hypnotized by the prospect of what is to come in this blog’s near future.

OR

2. I needed a break.

Either way, I will be posting regularly again, albeit on a less structured schedule than what I maintained before. I accomplished my initial goal of blasting out good music info to yall in the first year of this blog, and got an obscene amount of visits to confirm that yall were interested (thank you!)

So I’ll probably post less often than before, but I promise each one will be packed with cool stuff. I’ll follow up this post with some links to great FREE music for your holiday budgets!

Cheers! (not that I’m signing off…I meant that you are literally cheering right now. But I will also stop typing now. #YGOLOHCYSPESREVER)

‘Run’ FTW!

10Nov11

I don’t care if you like country music or soft rock or whatever…this song is GOOD. Matt Nathanson teamed up with Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland on ‘Run’, and last night at the Country Music Awards they knocked it out of the park with this performance:

Go and get Matt’s album Modern Love which is now discounted on iTunes and Amazon!

I’m still trying out life without iTunes…so far so good! Here’s some FREE music links for you, as you have come to expect every Friday!

1. My home town of Harrisburg is in deep shit right now. Indie rock artist Josh Ritter released a song titled ‘Harrisburg’ a while ago, and is now packaging the song along with some other goodies to profit the Central PA Food Bank. Charity rules! It’s a long way to Heaven, it’s closer to Harrisburg. Here’s the song:

2. Mac Miller is definitely doing work on the underground hip hop circuit, and his fans love him. As a reward for reaching 1 million Twitter followers, Mac put out a FREE mixtape called I Love Life, Thank You. You’re welcome! Awesome sample of Temper Trap on ‘Love Lost’!
Bonus listen (no download): Mac Miller single called ‘Blue Slide Park’ from ThisSongIsSick

3. I am officially digging this ‘Heart on Fire’ song by Scars on 45 right now, and if you head over to their website you can download some FREE stuff. Check them out now before they hit the radio!

4. James Morrison is a hell of a singer…the dude has old school skills that you don’t find in most pop artists anymore. Remember when I wrote about him? Check out this awesome cover version of Amy Winehouse‘s ‘Love is a Losing Game’. RIP Amy!
